A French alternative to VolunteerLocal
VolunteerLocal is a good tool, widely used in the United States. For a French association four things change — and one of them can count in its favour.
1. Language and support
The tool, its support and its documentation are in English. Your volunteers — not you, your volunteers — are the ones who will read it. Volunteo is in French, English and Breton, and support answers in French.
2. Billing
Billing in dollars adds a conversion, a currency fee and an invoice that does not look like what your treasurer expects. Our prices are in euros, and also in Swiss francs, pounds and Canadian dollars.
3. GDPR, and where your volunteers' data lives
This is the point that often rules a non-European tool out of an association's file or a public tender. Volunteo is hosted in France, publishes its privacy policy, offers every organiser a data processing agreement under article 28 — downloadable as a pre-filled PDF for your own register — and enforces its retention periods with a scheduled command, not with a promise.
4. The pricing model, and why it can count against us
VolunteerLocal charges a flat fee per event, with unlimited volunteers; we charge per accepted volunteer. The arithmetic consequence, which we would rather write ourselves: beyond a few hundred volunteers, a flat fee ends up cheaper than a per-head rate. Below that, the opposite is true, and by a wide margin.
In other words: if your event mobilises fifty to three hundred volunteers, our model favours you. If it mobilises a thousand, do the sum both ways before choosing. The pricing page gives you ours without having to write to us.
What the American tool has and we do not
A mobile app for volunteers, plus optional background checks and hour tracking. We have neither, and saying so here saves everybody's time.
What we do that is rare elsewhere
Perks deducted by scanning the badge's QR code, mail merge from a Word template, volunteer groups handed to a partner organisation with its own managers, and shift booking with substitutes and a waiting list.
Frequently asked questions
Our volunteers speak English, is this really an issue?
Less so, in that case. What remains is support, currency and GDPR: those are what weigh in a French association's file, not the language of the interface.
How do we get our data back if we change tools?
Every screen exports to Excel or CSV. That works both ways: a list exported from another tool imports here.
Do you offer an annual commitment?
Yes, for organisations that mobilise all year round: an annual licence at a fixed price, with a ceiling of volunteers. Otherwise, paying per event remains the rule, with no subscription.
